Carpe
eDatum and Ship-Rad Services Team Up To
Install Systems Aboard
Holland America Line Cruise Ships
Carpe
eDatum, Inc. announced today that, along with its distribution partner, Ship-Rad
Services of Vancouver B.C., it has entered into an agreement to license and
install Vamstec's Clinical Image Management System (CIMS) aboard two Holland
America Line ships. The first
installation aboard the Amsterdam
will interface with an existing CR digitizer.
The second system will be installed aboard the Zuiderdam,
which is under construction in Mestre, Italy near Venice, and will enter service
later this year. The Zuiderdam
system will interface with an Orex PCCR 1417, also being supplied and installed
by Carpe and Ship-Rad.
Holland
America plans to acquire and digitize images from its x-ray modalities in the
ships’ infirmaries using the CR devices and Vamstec software, then transmit
via an internet satellite link to The University of Texas Medical Branch in
Galveston, Texas (UTMB). UTMB
radiologists will read from Issa Diagnostic Viewers and dictate results directly
into the application. The dictation
will then be transcribed remote from the radiology department and transmitted
back to the ships’ infirmaries for review by the ships’ doctors.
The physicians will be able to use the newest feature of Issa called CD
exam writer, which creates a single patient Issa record on CD with associated
images for the passenger to take with them when they return to their personal
physician. The digital process provided by Carpe eDatum will improve
efficiencies, ensure security and patient privacy, reduce costs and facilitate
same day results. STAT results
could be made available in less than one hour.
"The
current process aboard the ships’ infirmaries is cumbersome and time
consuming, utilizing film and paper reports”; according to Holland America’s
Manager of Marine Medical Services, Sally van Boheemen. Sally
goes on to say, "We intend to exceed our passengers' expectations with the
CIMS from Carpe eDatum and Vamstec, delivering quality results from reading
radiologists and other remote specialists in a most expedient manner.
Without the CIMS, it would be virtually impossible to provide our doctors
and passengers with the diagnostic expertise that will be gained by immediate
consultation with UTMB staff radiologists.”
Carpe
eDatum announced in July 2001 that it had obtained exclusive distribution rights
for Vamstec in the U.S. In November
2001 Carpe announced that it entered into an agreement to license and install
Vamstec's CIMS in the UTMB Pathology Department in Galveston.
Vamstec
originally developed the software as a telepathology application that evolved to
address virtually all DICOM, non-DICOM, moving or still medical images. As part
of the UTMB agreement, the pathology department agreed to provide practical
input to Carpe eDatum and Vamstec that will assist in their development of a new
pathology specific application.
